About John Stephenson
As I celebrate my birthday, I am reflecting on the importance of community, representation, and giving back. This milestone is not only a personal celebration, but also an opportunity to champion the incredible work of the Emancipation Run Crew and their tireless efforts to break down the barriers to entry that Black and Brown communities face in the world of sports and beyond.
The Emancipation Run Crew is doing the critical work of increasing access and participation for marginalised groups, ensuring that everyone, no matter their background, has a chance to be a part of the race. Through their dedication and commitment, they are helping to create a more inclusive environment where people of all ages and backgrounds belong on the start line. In partnership with the Sickle Cell Society, our message is simple: *”Give Blood, Spread Love." I encourage everyone, especially those from Black and Brown communities, to consider donating blood.
Your donations can have a direct and meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by sickle cell disease.
This birthday, I am proud to stand with the Emancipation Run Crew and show that representation matters in every race, whether on the track or in life.
Let’s make a change, break down barriers, and save lives together.
Donate, support, and spread love.
Fundraising Information
This fundraising page benefits the following good causes:
Emanicpated Run Crew (ERC) was set up in 2019 by sisters Denise and Julia Stephenson (@we_run_we_eat) and friend Trojan Gordon (@thebeardedrunner) who were determined to challenge the lack of diversity in grassroots running by creating a virtual space where black and brown runners can support and encourage each other whatever our running goal. We will help you to run your own race and in doing so encourage you to Run Free!
The Sickle Cell Society is the only national charity in the UK that supports and represents people affected by a sickle cell disorder to improve their overall quality of life.
First set up as a registered charity in 1979, the Sickle Cell Society has been working alongside health care professionals, parents, and people living with sickle cell to raise awareness of the disorder. The Society’s aim is to support those living with sickle cell, empowering them to achieve their full potential.
The Sickle Cell Society believes that individuals with sickle cell have the right to quality care. This can only be achieved if funding is made available to educate health carers and other professionals about the condition. The Society aims to provide this.
The Society does not discriminate between the types of sickle cell disorders or the ethnic groups concerned. Both sexes are equally affected, and should have equal access to support and services within a confidential and sensitive environment. We respect the views of every patient.
We have a network of committed volunteers, who play an important part in running the charity, providing administrative backup, and helping with fund-raising activities.
Donations from the public and fundraising activities are also part of our life support. Without them, we would be unable to finance the essential research and educational projects and we would be unable to offer children a much-needed holiday. The Society benefits from the support of a wide range of individuals and organisations nationally, who together play a vital role in its success.
