About Michelle Edwards

Profile picture

The last time I ran the marathon was in 2012, Olympic year, and I vowed I would NEVER do it again. So here I am, with only four weeks left of training to do and it looks like I am really doing it. So why have I clearly taken leave of all my senses and voluntarily running it again? Well, my why? is rooted in community and is twofold, the first being Sickle Cell Anaemia (Give Blood Spread Love Campaign.)

Sickle Cell is an inherited blood disorder where the red blood cells become sickle or crescent-shaped. This abnormal shape causes the cells to become rigid and sticky, leading to blockages in blood flow, creating pain and various complications and predominantly affects those who are of Afro Caribbean heritage. From a personal perspective my goddaughter (my Jan) spent a lot her childhood in the hospital because of sickle cell (and still spends periods of time there today) and what we need are more people from the community giving blood and supporting researching into the disease.

The second, is the Emancipated Run Crew (ERC) 1834 Campaign. ERC are a running group whose aim is to provide a safe space for black and brown people to be meet and support one another whilst keeping fit at the same time. The group develop initiatives to encourage community through activity, for example, their Reinvigorate Croydon Programme. As a group we are passionate about giving back and creating programmes to support community and breakdown barriers to entry.

So those are my whys, which will be driving me around the course.

You’ll notice that I do not have a target. Whilst of course I want to raise as much money as I can for both campaigns, whatever you choose to give I am happy with. No amount is too big or too small, I’ll just be grateful that you took the time sponsor me.

So thanks for your time and I’ll see you are the end of the 26.2!

Fundraising Information

This fundraising page benefits the following good causes:

Emancipated Run Crew

Emanicpated Run Crew (ERC) was set up in 2019 by sisters Denise and Julia Stephenson (@we_run_we_eat) and friend Trojan Gordon (@thebeardedrunner) who were determined to challenge the lack of diversity in grassroots running by creating a virtual space where black and brown runners can support and encourage each other whatever our running goal.  We will help you to run your own race and in doing so encourage you to Run Free!

The Sickle Cell Society

The Sickle Cell Society is the only national charity in the UK that supports and represents people affected by a sickle cell disorder to improve their overall quality of life.
First set up as a registered charity in 1979, the Sickle Cell Society has been working alongside health care professionals, parents, and people living with sickle cell to raise awareness of the disorder. The Society’s aim is to support those living with sickle cell, empowering them to achieve their full potential.
The Sickle Cell Society believes that individuals with sickle cell have the right to quality care. This can only be achieved if funding is made available to educate health carers and other professionals about the condition. The Society aims to provide this.
The Society does not discriminate between the types of sickle cell disorders or the ethnic groups concerned. Both sexes are equally affected, and should have equal access to support and services within a confidential and sensitive environment. We respect the views of every patient.
We have a network of committed volunteers, who play an important part in running the charity, providing administrative backup, and helping with fund-raising activities.
Donations from the public and fundraising activities are also part of our life support. Without them, we would be unable to finance the essential research and educational projects and we would be unable to offer children a much-needed holiday. The Society benefits from the support of a wide range of individuals and organisations nationally, who together play a vital role in its success.
