About Folu Famoyin

Profile picture

I started my running journey just last April after being "lured" into it by my friends at work. I'd never been a runner nor was I the sporty type growing up. The most physical activity I did then was walking and the occasional gym time.

Then I started by going for long walks,  and the aforementioned friends encouraged me to quicken the pace literally.  Running gave me the time to meditate and rejuvenate. I found in it freedom and peace that I never thought was possible. With the added benefits of healthier lifestyle and a more confident me. People ask me why I'm doing the Marathon and my answer remains because I like to challenge myself, to be the best I can, for myself - with God's help -  and to help people along the way, where I can.

Now, I'm gearing up for the London Marathon, my second 26.2-mile challenge in as many weeks! With every step, I am not only defying expectations but also raising funds for two causes close to her heart: the Emancipated Run Crew - in conjunction with the Sickle Cell Society.

The Sickle Cell Society (SCS) supports and represents people affected by sickle cell disorder to improve their overall quality of life. The Emancipated Run Crew (ERC) is working with the SCS on the Give Blood, Spread Love, blood donation project. This initiative, aimed at the black-heritage communities help raise awareness of the need for ethnically matched blood to treat people with sickle cell and increase levels of confidence in giving blood and recruit new donors to the blood donation register.

The Emancipated Run Crew is a diverse and inclusive running community set up to support and encourage black and brown runners to meet and exceed their fitness goals. The community provides a space and a voice to those who may feel excluded from "mainstream" running community - to show that running is something that can be and should be open to all.

The ERC helped me find my voice and a place to be the best I can be. As a new member of the running community, I was welcomed and encouraged to run free, regardless of my size, age, backround, physique or ability. All are welcome as long as we Run Free.

Fast forward to a new me. I hope to inspire others with my determination and spirit - to believe in the power of late bloomers and the strength found in giving back to the community. With each stride, I am not only pushing my own limits but also making a difference in the lives of others, embodying the true spirit of resilience and generosity.

If I can do it, anyone can. And together, we got this!

Fundraising Information

This fundraising page benefits the following good causes:

Emancipated Run Crew

Emanicpated Run Crew (ERC) was set up in 2019 by sisters Denise and Julia Stephenson (@we_run_we_eat) and friend Trojan Gordon (@thebeardedrunner) who were determined to challenge the lack of diversity in grassroots running by creating a virtual space where black and brown runners can support and encourage each other whatever our running goal.  We will help you to run your own race and in doing so encourage you to Run Free!

The Sickle Cell Society

The Sickle Cell Society is the only national charity in the UK that supports and represents people affected by a sickle cell disorder to improve their overall quality of life.
First set up as a registered charity in 1979, the Sickle Cell Society has been working alongside health care professionals, parents, and people living with sickle cell to raise awareness of the disorder. The Society’s aim is to support those living with sickle cell, empowering them to achieve their full potential.
The Sickle Cell Society believes that individuals with sickle cell have the right to quality care. This can only be achieved if funding is made available to educate health carers and other professionals about the condition. The Society aims to provide this.
The Society does not discriminate between the types of sickle cell disorders or the ethnic groups concerned. Both sexes are equally affected, and should have equal access to support and services within a confidential and sensitive environment. We respect the views of every patient.
We have a network of committed volunteers, who play an important part in running the charity, providing administrative backup, and helping with fund-raising activities.
Donations from the public and fundraising activities are also part of our life support. Without them, we would be unable to finance the essential research and educational projects and we would be unable to offer children a much-needed holiday. The Society benefits from the support of a wide range of individuals and organisations nationally, who together play a vital role in its success.
