About Daisy Daly
This July, I’m taking on a deeply personal challenge: running 96.6 miles (155 km) over the course of the month — that’s 3.119 miles (5 km) every single day, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey.
Why 3.119 miles? Because in 2025, it’s estimated that 3,119 people in the UK will lose their lives to melanoma, a serious and often preventable form of skin cancer.
Why This Is Close to My Heart
On 1 July 2025, the first day of this challenge, it will be five years since I lost my amazing mum, Nicola, to Malignant Melanoma. My mum was first diagnosed in July 2014, six years after having a cancerous mole removed from her back. We had hoped that early action would stop the cancer in its tracks — but its not always as simple as that.
Mum was a true fighter and a passionate supporter of cancer charities. She took part in the Race for Life, abseiled off the Val de la Mare reservoir dam in Jersey, and rarely missed a Macmillan coffee morning or cake sale. Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey was a place she found comfort — a space where she could talk, be heard and feel supported by kind and understanding volunteers.
This challenge isn’t just about the miles. I’m not a natural runner, and the hardest part won’t be the distance, but the daily commitment. Showing up every day in July, even when I’m tired, sore, or the weather is against me, will be tough. But if my mum could fight through six years of pain, worry, and treatment, I can push through 31 days of running in her honour to raise money for a charity that supported her.
Why Awareness Matters
Melanoma is now the fifth most common cancer in the UK, and alarmingly, rates are rising — particularly among younger adults. In 2025, an estimated 19,513 people will be diagnosed with melanoma — a 22% increase in just two years.
While many of us have been caught out by the sun at some point, the good news is that around 90% of melanoma cases are preventable. By taking simple steps to protect your skin, you can significantly reduce your risk.
Here are some key facts everyone should know:
- Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer
- Sunburn just once every couple of years can triple your risk of developing melanoma.
- Melanoma doesn’t always start with a mole — it can appear on skin that looks otherwise normal.
- Melanoma can develop anywhere on the body – eyes, scalp, nails, feet, mouth, etc.
- UV rays can still damage your skin on cloudy or cool days, especially between March and October in the UK.
- Prevention is powerful: wear sunscreen daily, avoid peak sun hours, cover up with clothing and hats, check your skin regularly for changes, and if there is anything you see or feel that you are worried about, go and get it checked!
Early detection saves lives.
