About Sha and his five Guide Runners
In 2021, Sha Khan’s life changed completely when he lost 90% of his sight over two weeks. One minute he was living a regular life and next he had become totally dependent on others. However, with such a sudden life-change, Sha has learnt to focus on the positive and has now embraced a multitude of sporting opportunities with the support of a community of coaches and guides in Jersey: from Couch to 5k, parkrun, the London Landmarks ½ Marathon and even the Jersey Ana Leaf Try-A-Tri Triathlon.
Now … He’s embarking on his first full marathon on 1st October 2023, supported by five guides who will each guide Sha for a part of it. The guides are John Cunningham, Ritchie Dickinson, Martyn White, Alastair Christie and Salem Showgy. Inspired by his dreams and achievements, Sha and his guides wish to use this event to give something back and have chosen a fabulous Jersey Charity – Healing Waves – to raise some much-needed funds for.
Sha himself has benefitted from the from amazing work that Healing Waves carry out in the community and says, “At my very first session I knew there is something special about Healing Waves. The care I felt, and their emphasis on safety made me feel this was somewhere I could forget about the world. Healing Waves lifted my confidence and made me feel like surfing is something I can actually do.”
Every pound goes a long way & would be greatly appreciated by people exactly like me, thank you.
About The Charity
This fundraising page benefits the following charity:
Healing Waves is a charity based in Jersey Channel Islands. We enable individuals with physical, neurological & mental health challenges to access the ocean in a safe way, to participate in surf, paddle and flowrider sessions.
We offer Ocean Therapy through guided surf, paddle and flow sessions. These water sports are used as a vessel, helping our athletes to gain more self-confidence and communication skills, whilst providing therapy and respite for all. Water sports can stimulate the ‘stoke’ like feeling and can promote a sense of accomplishment and empowerment in our Athletes, whilst families, friends and carers cheer them on from the side lines. We encourage loved ones and carers to participate in sessions, helping to strengthen the (often strained) bonds which are vital for healthy relationships.
