Bugarama has a serious problem of young people dropping out of school due to high levels of poverty, turning to the streets for survival as their families are unable to meet basic needs. It’s a precarious way of living – some resort to theft, smuggling or prostitution. Many sleep rough, seeking shelter where they can, for example in unfinished buildings. 
Father Emmanuel at St Paul Muko has sought to address this through the Street Children’s Lives Matter campaign. The school has actively sought out children to encourage them back into school with the offer of two meals a day, including weekends and holidays. 
By participating in sport and music they are integrated into school and keep active, avoiding slipping back into old ways. They are some of the best players in Muko’s successful teams. 
Some of these students are very capable. Two have been recognised as among the top students in the country. 
The school now supports over 400 students. They have dedicated two teachers to support them and rented houses to provide hostels for those who are completely homeless. 
HATWJ admires the work done by St Paul Muko has set aside a budget of £10,000 a year to support this initiative.
