About StooVil 666 Goldberg

Profile picture

I’ve loved heavy metal for as long as I can recall… combining this with causes I am passionate about, raising both money for underprivileged children AND awareness of issues people face is as my best friend of 44 years, Mike Penrose, recently stated; ‘some things you just have to do’.

So, Mike and I shall be undertaking the 175-mile cycle ride from London‘s Alexandra Palace to Download festival 2023 at the home of British heavy metal, Donington Park.

So, other than being invited along and the prospect of completing the challenge with Mike, why am I doing this?

In July I will be two years clear of cancer. The mental and physical challenge was immense. Not only me, but best mate of nearly 30 years, Alan, college friend Nicky and respected colleague Alex have all suffered tremendously due to cancer and its related side effects.

It was recently the 10 year anniversary of the passing of friend and respected photographer Ashley Maile. He had bowel cancer and was just 35. I think of him any time download festival is mentioned in conversation.

Mark Walker, an ex-doorman colleague and close friend passed away 4 years ago this year - the news was shared with me the day I arrived at BloodStock festival… he was a vivacious and strong character, much missed. He had bladder cancer and was 57

If Mike, fellow Truants and myself can raise anything by way of financial support and awareness, then goal accomplished.

Please, if you can, share and donate as you are able.

About HMT 2023: Go To 11

Since 2013 the Heavy Metal Truants have been breaking a sweat to raise funds for childrens’ charities in the name of heavy metal. Open to all, HMT has seen metal fans, bands, and industry types banding together to help raise over £1M both through charitable activities throughout the year like the Monster Rock Auction and our Heavy Metal Curries, but primarily through our traditional, now legendary annual 175-mile cycle from London to the hallowed heavy metal ground of Castle Donington and Download festival in June and our more recently added virtual challenges.

Covid-19 couldn’t stop us. 2020 saw the heartbreaking cancellation of Download Festival, so we came up with a virtual way of doing Heavy Metal Truants which also added walkers and runners into the mix from all over the world, as well as some epic stretch targets for those on two wheels. The spirit caught on, and it became our biggest event to date. In 2021 we did the same and smashed a million pound running total in the process, and we kept climbing by six figures in 2022.

Our chosen charities work very hard to support children and young people who need our support now more than ever, so we call on all metalheads from around the world to join us in the name of heavy metal. Every year has had a theme or a nickname, and in our 11th year we invoke immortal words of Spinal Tap taking it all the way to 11!

Between May 28th and June 9th we invite you to enter the annals of Heavy Metal Truants fame with cycling, walking, running, challenges and more. All proceeds will go to Teenage Cancer Trust, Childline, Nordoff Robbins and Save the Children.

Join us and make a difference for kids and young people today!
