Ten years ago I participated in the Race for Life. This year my wonderful work colleagues/friends and family are racing for me.
Two months ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
This is my story.
While getting dressed in front of the mirror I noticed a slight indent in my breast, barely noticeable so much so that due to the light in the room I couldn’t see it when I looked in another mirror. I checked for lumps and bumps, but couldn’t feel anything. I almost dismissed it as I genuinely thought it would it was nothing. However I’ve always been worried about cancer so I thought it was worth having it checked out to put my mind at rest.
Very glad I went for that appointment as the barely visible indent turned out to be a cancerous tumour. In hindsight there were other symptoms I overlooked such as breast tenderness, extreme fatigue which I put down to the menopause and side effects of HRT.
I am half way through my chemotherapy, first step before surgery then radiotherapy. My cancer was diagnosed early and that gives me the best chance of a full recovery.
So ladies, please get to know your breasts, self examine regularly and if you notice any changes in them, however big or small get yourself checked, make that appointment it could save your life.
