About Kay Matthews

Profile picture

Every year I'm reminded why Le Cure is so much more than a cycling event.

In the last week of August, I'll be back in the French Alps, joining an incredible group of riders taking on four days of relentless climbing in support of life-changing cancer research. This year's route includes some of cycling's most iconic mountains, including the mighty Cime de la Bonette, Col de Vars, Col d'Izoard and Col du Lautaret – over 500 km and around 13,000 metres of climbing in total. That's more than one and a half times the height of Everest.

But the real challenge isn't the mountains – it's cancer.

Le Cure is run entirely by volunteers under the umbrella of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, so every penny donated goes directly into world-class research. Since 2014, the event has raised more than £3.3 million, funding pioneering research and creating six Le Cure Research Fellowships.

One example of what your support makes possible? Le Cure-funded research helped prove that a simple blood test – a liquid biopsy – could guide treatment for breast cancer patients. Today, that work is helping transform cancer care, with blood tests beginning to change how patients are diagnosed and monitored.

That is why I'm prepared to spend four days grinding my way up Alpine climbs, battling tired legs, steep gradients and (almost certainly!) questioning my life choices.

About Le Cure 2026

Dear Curistas

As you probably know, if you've got this far, Le Cure de France is a charity cycling event established in 2014 to raise money for breast cancer research at the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.  So far we have raised over £3.8 million to fund our 8 Le Cure Research Fellowships (and counting), but have much more work to do to help cure cancer.

The route for 2026 includes the formidable Cime de la Bonette (the highest paved road in the Alps), the Col de l'Iseran (the highest mountain pass) and the might Col d'Izoard - fondly remembered from our first ever Le Cure.

Sign up and get cycling!  We can't wait for you to join us in the Alps to raise money to fund new, cutting-edge cancer research at the Royal Marsden Hospital.
