About Annabel Mears

Profile picture

On 14th August, I'll be taking on my very first triathlon as part of the inaugural Sidekick Triathlon 2026.

Together with the Disney Triathlon Team, I'll be completing a 750m open water swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run to help raise money for the Superhero Sport Foundation.

The Foundation helps break down barriers to disability sport, creating opportunities for people of all abilities to build confidence, develop skills, and experience the joy of being active.

Given that I didn’t own a bike a couple of months ago, there have been a few learning curves along the way – from clipping into pedals, to convincing myself that swimming in the Thames was a good idea!

If you're able to support me with a donation, no matter how big or small, I'd be incredibly grateful!

Our Mission
We believe that every one of the UK's 16.8m people with disabilities has their own unique superpowers. And we're here to help unleash them! Our mission is to remove the barriers to participation these 'Everyday Superheroes' face every day.
A super-sized plan of attack
We aim to bombard barriers to disability sport participation from all sides. Here are just some of the ways we hope to make a difference:
Back to school: It's crucial that every school child is introduced to sport in the right way, with the right attitude, using the right vocabulary. We have developed a Super Schools programme to remove barriers to 100% inclusive sport and have involved hundreds of school pupils in both virtual and physical events. From classroom activities to accessible and fully funded buses to take groups to Superhero events at Dorney Lake, we provide these opportunities for schools.
Advancing amateur sport: We work to extend these skills and knowledge to sports clubs, coaches, volunteers, charities and families in the wider community by providing all kinds of fun and innovative training and unique taster sessions at our events to help make inclusivity the norm.
The gift of grants: We provide financial support to organisations and individuals to enable them to purchase the specialist equipment, training and support they need to deliver the programmes, services and events effectively.
Future fantastic: We're making it a priority to invest in research and technological advancements to create new solutions and make the currently impossible possible.
Seeing is believing: Lack of confidence is the number one barrier to participation. We hope that by putting all these building blocks in place to challenge perceptions and create fun new opportunities, this last great hurdle will fall.
We smash barriers to sport: Confidence, Cost, Opportunity!
