Running in memory of my amazing Dad ❤️

On 4th June 2026, I lost my amazing Dad, Mick after a three-year battle with cancer.

Dad’s journey began in 2023 when a routine bowel screening led to a colonoscopy where doctors discovered a large tumour in his colon. He underwent major surgery to remove the tumour and part of his bowel. We then discovered that Dad carried the FAP gene — something that I have also inherited and now have lifelong monitoring for.

He went through chemotherapy after cancer was found in his lymph nodes but in August 2024 we received the devastating news that the cancer had spread to his liver. Dad underwent another major operation to remove the cancer which was followed by a collapsed lung, pneumonia and a liver abscess.

Sadly over the following months the cancer continued to spread to his liver, lungs, bones and spine. Dad endured more treatment, hospital stays, procedures and setbacks than anyone should ever have to go through. Eventually there was nothing more that could be done to stop the cancer and his care became focused on keeping him comfortable and giving him the best possible quality of life.

In his final days, Dad was cared for at Meadow House Hospice.

Those final days were some of the hardest of our lives but the care and kindness Dad received at Meadow House meant so much to our family. They looked after him with such compassion and dignity, while also supporting us as a family through something none of us were ready for.

Dad was so much more than his cancer.

He was my hero. My strong and funny, resilient Dad. He loved his family more than anything and even throughout everything he was going through he still found ways to make us laugh. He never deserved the pain and suffering that cancer put him through but I will always be incredibly proud of the way he faced it.
