About Matteo Smyth

Hector and I will be taking part in a charity hitchhike to Paris to raise money for the PACTA foundation in Uganda. The foundation is run by volunteers, all of which are reformed alcoholics, and aims to curb alcoholism rates in Central and Northern areas of the country. Alcohol is often used as a coping mechanism for families having to deal with the aftershocks of both the Lord's Resistance Army and the brutal reign of Idi Amin, experiences I heard first hand from those who lived through them. Alcoholism is a disease that not only harms the individual both physically and economically, but families, friends and the development of the region as a whole. Not only this, but alcoholism rates have been linked to epidemics of domestic violence, school drop-out rates, and sexually transmitted diseases, all of which seeing a rise in numbers in the area in recent years. With Uganda still holding the unwanted statistic of spending the highest percentage of their yearly income on alcohol (49%), the work of PACTA and your donations have never been so crucial. Any donation big or small would be greatly appreciated. Teo and Hector xxxxx
