About Mike Weatherley

Profile picture

My HUGE HUGE HUGE thanks to all that have sponsored me and helped me beat my target. I am currently stuck at Stevenage (about 1/3 of the way there) due to combination of work and family life - but have a holiday coming up in July so this WILL get finished.

All who have sponsored will get an email as I get over the finishing line. My thanks once again

Over the next three weeks I will be cursing Rod Smallwood and Alexander Milas. A lot!

But its all in a good cause.

As many of you will know, HMTs was started by Rod in 2009 and has raised an absolutely outstanding £4m since then. I was lucky enough to be on the first ever Truants ride following the Nile in 2009 but work and cancer (3 times!) got in the way of doing more.

And now Alex has persuaded me to get back on the saddle and ride again.

Alex in 2013 set up an additional (to the annual epic HMT rides organised by Rod) whoppingly tough 175 mile ride to Download Festival each year at Donnington Park. This year Download is cancelled of course but the ride continues virtually.

So I have programmed in the route to my NordicTrack static bike and aim to finish by 13th June which would have been the first day of the festival. My bike projects the streets from Google Street maps onto my screen so its almost like being on the actual route. It even automatically adjusts the resistance for all the hills (however simulating the rain is thankfully avoided). At my age and an unfit prior 7 weeks of lock down, this is not going to be any picnic.

Any donation is welcomed. I have set a high target to keep me peddling. As a guide, some are donating £66.66 to follow metal traditions, but anything is appreciated. I know there are many calls on your funds for charity.

Many thanks

Mike

About HMT 2020: The Eighth of Spades - Virtual Ride

Raise money for Nordoff Robbins, Teenage Cancer Trust, Childline, and Save the Children!

For the last eight years the Heavy Metal Truants have been doing an annual charity cycle ride from London to Download Festival set upon the hallowed heavy metal grounds of Castle Donington. Open to all, our charity ride has seen metal fans, bands, and industry types getting on their bikes and raising £681,500 in the process.

We were heartbroken to see Download Festival cancelling this year - a decision which we of course fully support. We weren’t happy to sit this year out though. Our chosen charities, all of which work hard to support children and young people, need our support now more than ever, so we’re calling on all metalheads from around the world to join us in the name of heavy metal.

As it’s the 40th anniversary of Motorhead’s Ace of Spades, what better with which to honour Lemmy than to call it…

HEAVY METAL TRUANTS 8: THE EIGHTH OF SPADES!

THE PLAN:

Between June 1st and in the run-up to June 12th, the weekend of Virtual Download Festival, we want you to get in the saddle and join us on a virtual ride. Anything with pedals which you can log on Strava is fine - actual bikes, smart trainers, or simple exercise bikes: if you can log the miles on Strava, you can join the ride. If you are going outside on a real bike though we ask that you do so safely and according to government guidelines!
