The good life… I’ve always loved the water. According to the science of Ayurveda I’m a ‘Kapha’ type which is a person whose energies are made up of the elements of water and earth and true to form I’m never happier or feel more alive than when I’m in the ocean or wallowing in mud! Whilst I love to swim, I’ve never tried surfing. My late husband used to wax lyrical about his surfing days back in the sixties and how whilst on police duty he would sneak off down to St Ouen on his police bike for a quick surfing session. On one occasion, he left his radio mike stretched up to the beach guard’s hut in case he got called out. Sure enough ‘BLUE HALO, BLUE HALO – CAR CRASH AT FIVE OAKS!’ was belted out over the tannoy by a bemused Aussie lifeguard as Barrie furiously paddled back in. He eventually arrived at the scene of the accident late and dripping wet! No such shenanigans these days! For me a good life is all about the possibilities and potential of what people and things can be. Nothing lights me up more than helping others and myself, to find joy and purpose, both in my personal life and in my work as a business advisor with Jersey Business. The HEALING WAVES charity perfectly embodies this ethos so when the surfing challenge ‘popped up’ (excuse the pun!) I just knew I had to give it a go. It will be a challenge for me, I’m no spring chicken and I’m scared of big waves but no doubt the spirit of ‘Blue Halo’ will see me safely and happily through.
