The current situation following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has instigated a major emergency in the provision of neonatal care to small, sick, and vulnerable newborn infants. 

Infants born prematurely require care and support to survive given their body weight, skin integrity, and general immaturity. In normal circumstances, this care is provided by standard incubator environments providing warmth and protection. These would be in a hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). 

The evolving situation is leading to many NICUs not being able to operate safely, and infants being taken to safe bunkers for care – often without any electricity or warmth – due to conventional systems being immobile, too heavy, and with little ability to use back up power systems. 

For every 1 degree drop in a newborn’s body temperature, there is a 28% increase in mortality (death). As a result of war, preterm births have skyrocketed from an average 10% to a potential 23%+. This has made the need even greater with the prospect of Ukraine losing an entire generation of children.
