About 5 for Headway Fun Run 2024

Join us for our second fun run event! 5 for Headway is a run, walk or stroll for anyone. Taking place on Sunday 6th October at KGV Playing Fields. Choose to enter either the 5 miles, 5k or 500m events to fundraise for Headway Guernsey.  A huge thank you to our event sponsor Ravenscroft Construction!

Our theme, as last year, for the event is Hats for Headway, with a prize for the best hat! Get your thinking caps on...

We will be at Headway HQ (based at KGV) on Thursday 3rd October from 5pm-7pm for those who want to grab their T-shirt and race number before the event. If not, come a little earlier to collect them on Sunday. There are only a limited number of T-shirts so get signing up to ensure you have one!!

The 5 mile course: We have created a course that will take you over old favourites and fields that are rarely used in Guernsey and we are sure that you'll enjoy the experience.

1. Start with 2 laps of KGV - Stuart and his team do a great job of maintaining the surfaces at KGV so just enjoy running on the lush, green grass.

2. 2¼ laps of the field adjoining KGV. Firstly we need to leave via a douit to enter into adjoining fields. There is a huge overhanging tree that we are reluctant to remove so there will be a bit of climb to get over it! All part of the fun! The field is privately owned and has been cut back to create a smooth running path around it.

3. Up Ruette Des Amais, Right onto Rue des Houmets. This is 400m on small quiet roads. Obviously, as it’s Guernsey, one of the roads is impassable due to road works at the moment but hopefully that will be rectified. We also run past Lee Merrien’s house so please be quiet in case his children, Jess and Tom, are having a lie-in

4. 2 ½ laps around Home Farm. There’s little mud and the grass is shorter on Home farm than normal so enjoy the laps

5. 3 laps of Saumarez Park. We cut across to Saumarez Park – which is always at its best on a Sunday morning. We will do just short of 3 laps of Saumarez Park

6. ½ lap of KGV. Downhill to KGV and then a glory sprint half way round KGV.

The 5k  run follows a similar route to the Race for life 5k from KGV before heading p to Saumarez Park. We then do 3 laps of the park before heading back down to KGV. Then it’s a couple of laps of KGV and all finished. A nice, leisurely 5k start to your Sunday!

The 500m race is free to enter and for everyone, and we encourage all  community groups to get involved. It will be one lap of KGV field! This will begin shortly before the other races.

We will time both the 5 mile and 5k races and both will start around 9.30am. The routes will be explained on the day and we will have marshals on the way to direct you and cheer you on!! Dogs are welcome but please keep them on a lead! The cafe at KGV will be open from 9am for post run drinks and snacks.

The whole event is based on having fun, being inclusive and supporting Headway's work in the island.

About Us

Mission and support

Headway Guernsey is a local charity supporting islanders and their families who are living with the long-term effects of a brain injury. We provide a range of services that bring people together in a supportive environment helping them on their road to recovery to a life back into the community.

What is a brain injury?

A brain injury can happen to anyone at any time through a blow to the head in an accident, stroke, an assault, a sports injury, brain haemorrhage, brain tumour, meningitis or encephalitis. Your brain controls everything about you – your movement, your thinking, your planning, your personality, your memories, your feelings. If you suffer a brain injury it can affect you in many ways; sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, problems with speech, serious memory loss and restricted mobility.

Typically brain injury survivors and their families talk of feeling “lost and alone” and before Headway was launched in 2006, after the initial acute care survivors were often sent home to recover on their own. Now this is no longer the case and Headway supports over 80 islanders and their families with the services we provide, helping them to rebuild a life that has been shattered. We have celebrated members regain confidence, a sense of worth, mobility, learn to walk again, drive again and on occasions return to work.
