We chose this charity because we were personally inspired by their work with refugees when we visited Kavala for three weeks this summer. Whilst the Refugee Crisis is not publicised in the headlines to the same extent it was during 2015, the problems have not receded. Whilst annual numbers of migrants into Europe may have declined, the deadliness of these journeys has only escalated and so the need for action and support has not subsided. Northern Lights Aid is the only charity which provides material support for the people of Perigiali refugee camp.The camp consists of refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq who are fleeing adversity. This plight has never been more relevant given the large Kurdish population in the camp and the current political situation. NLA are crucially responsible for supplying clothes, baby supplies, basic hygiene and emergency packs for the people here. They also provide essential english classes, kindergarten and community projects to improve the quality of life for the 500+ families in the camp. We spent three weeks volunteering with them this summer and saw first hand how meaningful, and valued their work is. Working alongside the inspiring members of the camp and other volunteers we feel extremely motivated to help them continuing their established support here. Northern Lights Aid is a small charity solely reliant on donations and volunteer fundraising. The support they are able to provide has recently come under more strain with the camp almost doubling in size in the last few weeks.
